REJURAN (BIO-REGENERATION)
Rejuran® is the brand name of a new class of injectable treatments called 'polynucleotides'. It is the only TGA-approved polynucleotide product available in Australia. Unlike the brand names of anti-wrinkle or filler products, Rejuran is not classified as a medicine or an S4 drug and therefore it can be discussed on websites, social media and in marketing.
Rejuran is very different to facial volumisers, bio-remodellers or bio-stimulators. It is made from marine-derived DNA fragments - the so called 'polynucleotides'. Despite what you might have read online, the DNA isn't from salmon sperm, it's actually from the testicle tissue of the fish.
When injected, the DNA fragments signal to the dermis of your skin via a number of different cellular pathways. In simple terms, they help support your skin's own regenerative capabilities. Polynucleotides can help promote healing, repair and rejuvenation. Therefore Nurse Shaniese sometimes refers to Rejuran as a 'skin bio-regenerator'.
WHAT IS REJURAN & WHAT ARE POLYNUCLEOTIDES?

Rejuran is a clear, colourless and odourless solution. It contains polynucleotides or 'PN' for short. In the Rejuran manufacturing plant in South Korea, the salmon used are wild and are not farmed or bred. Instead the salmon are harvested when they literally swim into the factory after mating and at a time in their lifecycle when they would naturally die anyway.
Polynucleotides are purified, bio-active DNA fragments. You can think of polynucleotides as 'building blocks' that when added together make up strands of DNA. Injectable polynucleotides are very runny liquids in appearance and look and feel like a watery-serum. Therefore they are completely different to other traditional injectable products such as facial volumisers.
Rejuran is injected as multiple tiny dots just under the surface of the skin known as the 'dermis'. Immediately after a treatment you will see multiple raised dots all over the skin. This 'bumpy' look to the skin is very noticeable but only lasts for approximately 24-48 hours.
When injected, polynucleotides help stimulate your body's own regenerative and repair mechanisms. Rejuran has been used in Asia since 2014 and over 10 million syringes have been used to date. A huge advantage of polynucleotides is that they have never caused a vascular occlusion. This means the risk of blindness or stroke (that is associated with fillers) is essentially zero.
Korean doctors with nearly a decade of experience using Rejuran have noticed how it also seems help improve issues like sensitive skin and redness. It's therefore also a very useful product when used in combination with laser treatments to improve healing and downtime from these treatments, but also to optimise the overall results. Those who suffer with rosacea or melasma should therefore consider adding Rejuran into their overall skin treatment plan as it may help improve the health of the skin barrier in combination with other treatments.

Downtime
-
Local anaesthetic cream will be applied to the area being treated prior to a treatment. Rejuran does still have some mild to moderate stinging associated with the injections but these are very quick and very tolerable.
-
Some needle marks or more obvious bruising is very common with Rejuran due to the amount of injections done. This is especially true around the eye area. Avoiding any non-prescribed blood thinners in the week prior (including fish oils, aspirin and NSAID medications) will help reduce this risk. You can also wear make up the following day to hide any bruising.
-
As a result of how Rejuran is injected, you will have also multiple visible 'bumps' over the skin area treated. These are self-limiting and in normal skin will disappear on their own in approximately 48 hours. (If you have thinner or peri-menopausal skin, this may take a day or so longer) Whilst you can go to work or socialise after Rejuran, you might feel a little self-conscious or have people asking what treatment you had done. So these treatments should be planned accordingly if you need to be discrete!
After Care
You can go back to your normal daily activities after a treatment except for a few important instructions:
1) Do not apply makeup, bronzer, fake tan, skin. products, serums, sunscreen or similar for at least 12 hours after a treatment. Fillers are injectable implants and it's vital to avoid any risk of infection.
2) Do not massage or rub the areas injected until any tenderness has subsided. This also includes not doing treatments like having a facial, lying down on a table massage or similar. You should let any swelling subside before these. It's also best to avoid any significant heat including laser/radio-frequency treatments, saunas, hot yoga, etc.
3) It's best to avoid doing any sports, exercise or vigorous activity for 24-48 hours afterwards. This will allow the initial swelling after fillers to start improving and reduce your chances of any delayed bruising (as raising your blood pressure and core temperature significantly increase blood flow to the skin).
What if I think I have a problem or need to be seen after my filler treatment?
Nurse Shaniese offers complimentary 30 minute filler reviews for her patients and this can be booked online yourself. If you're experiencing anything outside of what's listed above or you're simply not sure, please just email the clinic that you were treated at with some photos of the area treated and Nurse Shaniese will triage your filler review as soon as she can.
REJURAN FAQ'S
What exactly is Rejuran? It is a new class of injectable called polynucleotides. These are made from marine-derived DNA and are non-hyaluronic acid based. This means that they are not classed as fillers and work completely differently to fillers.
What are Rejuran treatments for? Polynucleotides are long chains of amino acids that are naturally found in your body. They are expressed in the skin where they play important roles in skin health. Injections are designed to provide cellular remodelling addressing: • Collagen stimulation • Slowing down the aging process • Treatment of lines, wrinkles, pores & textural changes • Hydration of skin (but bio-remodelling treatments are better if hydration is your main concern)
How long do results take to see after Rejuran treatments? Results can be seen as early as the first two weeks, however it takes 3-6 months for maximal collagen remodelling to occur. A series of 2-4 sessions, spaced 2-4 weeks apart is recommended for the best results.
How many Rejuran treatments do I need? Three Rejuran sessions are recommended, every 2-4 weeks. If you have more obvious skin concerns such as peri-menopausal skin changes ,sun damage, crepey/thin skin or sensitivity, a 4th treatment is strongly recommended. After the initial protocol of 3 or 4 sessions, 1-2 sessions are recommended every year to maintain the effects.
Are there any contraindications to Rejuran? The only known complication of using Rejuran is when treating the same layer of the skin that has already had cross-linked fillers injected into it. This can rarely result is 'nodules' - firm lumps that can be troublesome to treat and may be unsightly. Cross-linked fillers are sometime known as 'skin boosters' and so to be safe, please find out from your previous injector what filler was used and where to avoid this rare issue.
Can Rejuran cause vascular occlusions or blindness like fillers? Rejuran has been used for 10 years in South Korea and other countries. To date, over 10 million syringes have been used and not a single case of vascular occlusion or blindness has been reported. Rejuran is made from completely different ingredients to dermal fillers and so this is thought to be the reason why the risk has so far been shown to be zero when using Rejuran.
